That all depends....When was the last time you polished your crystal collection? Should someone burn some sage? Is mercury in retrograde? jk jk
If you’re like me and dealing with androgenic alopecia, then you know doing your hair can be stressful. I might be feeling totally confident and then depending on how my hair turned out decide it might be best to sit this one out.
But what I've found over the years is that the tools we use to conceal hair loss can really make a difference. I rely on these six tools almost everyday to help conceal my own hair thinning and I've listed them out below.

I have such thin hair and I’ve really struggled with finding a product that adds thickness without leaving it feeling oily or just plain grungy after I blow dry. I’m not auditioning for a Nirvana cover band… So I’m into that, “product-free feel.”
My process with this cream is pretty simple. I work this evenly through my damp hair and then blow dry with my head flipped upside down. Give me that volume, baby.
I suggest starting with a small amount. A little bit really does go a long way. Maybe try about a dime size or even half a dime size and build from there depending on your own hair length and thickness...
Hair fibers save lives. If you don’t know, now you know. I first found out about hair fibers through Hair Club and they were such a game changer for me. I just sprinkle them on the areas where I’m thinning and they cling to my existing hair follicles, covering any noticeable bald spots or patchiness.
I use this specific brand because I have found they aren’t as clumpy as other hair fibers that I have tried. But that doesn’t mean that after I sprinkle them on, the work is done. I still use a fine tooth comb to comb through my hair to ensure that the hair fibers are dispersed evenly.
Here’s another tip I’ve found when using these…Let’s say I want to wear my hair parted down the middle. Originally I thought, okay so let’s sprinkle the fibers to the left and the right of the desired part. Then comb it through to make sure the fibers are evenly dispersed…. and there you have it! Perfection! Sounds simple enough… Right?
Well.. I don’t do that anymore. I’ve found this doesn’t always give me realistic looking coverage. It can look too heavy. Now I’ve improved upon this method and maybe this next tip could work for you.
My current technique using the fibers is as follows: I like to make multiple hair partings to the left and the right of my desired part, add the fibers, and comb them through.
Example: Let’s say again that the middle part is your desired look. Then I would start off by creating parts that are to the left and to the right of my desired middle part and add fibers. Then I’d create another part next to that one and add more fibers. This sandwiching technique (hair + fibers + hair) has given me a more realistic look because the fibers are now layered throughout my hair as opposed to just to the left and right of my desired part.
Critical: I always comb the fibers through my hair. Then I blast my hair with some light-hold hairspray to lock the fibers in place.
For me the hairline is such a special location. When I first noticed I was thinning around my hairline I was devastated. Don’t get me wrong... balding at the back of my head was a bummer, but I would just sprinkle on some hair fibers and keep it moving. The hairline is just different. I mean... it's basically the gateway to the face! Hair fibers just didn’t cut it. There was a certain amount of precision and finessing required to really make a sparse hairline look full and natural. I just want to call out that I'm still not an expert at my hairline. I'd say it's a work in progress but I've come a long way.
I use this fill-in powder almost daily around my hairline. The applicator brush that the fill-in powder comes with allows me to place the powder exactly where I want it to go...This gives me more control than using hair fibers or a root touch up spray for coverage. But let me just call out: If you're someone who loves a good applicator brush... then this is probably not it. I personally use the brush with no issues. It does it's job. But their are usually bristles poking out in every direction that shed from the brush pretty easily. So you may want to use your own applicator brush, although I don't find it to be necessary for me.
I try to avoid applying the fill-in powder directly onto my scalp because I find that it can look a bit too dense and blotchy. Instead, I brush the fill-in powder on top of my bio hair and continue to smooth it out with the applicator brush until the powder eventually brushes into my scalp. Then I soften up any harsh edges to create a natural looking hairline that seamlessly blends with my own bio hair.
Besides the applicator brush, this compact also comes with its own mirror which is nice if you’re packing this in your purse for touch ups. I have not experienced clumping or matting with this product. But as a disclaimer I don't wear it in situations where I’m prone to excessive sweating. For example...At the gym you can find me in a hat.
Let's say I’ve filled in any thinning or balding areas. What's next? This tool. I first learned about it while browsing youtube for videos on how to conceal a thinning hairline and stumbling upon Laura Rae Beauty.
I like to use the side of this tool that resembles a toothbrush, to go in and soften any of the edges that might look too harsh. This has been my process any time I’m wearing my hair pulled back in a bun or a ponytail.
The bristles on this brush are very coarse and stiff which allows me to go in and really diffuse the fibers and the fill-in powder as I brush into my scalp.
Once I’m happy with how everything is blended I will use the comb side. I like that the teeth of the comb are so tiny because it really separates the strands of my bio hair and provides me with more coverage.
If I’m going to be wearing a hair topper or if I’m going to be wearing clip-in extensions this is my ride or die product. My hair is so thin and wispy that the hair extension clips would just slide down my bio hair. I never felt like the clips were secure unless I had ratted my hair and sprayed it with tons of hairspray.
This product totally changes the texture of my hair, and a little goes such a long way... So use sparingly! (I have used too much before and it’s given my hair a tacky and gunky feel.)
I sprinkle this powder into my dry hair at the location where my extension clips are going to be. The powder is white and light weight. It disappears once you work it into your hair without much residual white cast. You just have to work it through your hair for it to fully disappear. I notice an immediate lift at the root, increased volume, and added texture which gives my extension clips something to hold onto.
If you use extensions or hair toppers and want to move away from ratting your hair to get your clips to hold in place then this might work for you. I've linked my favorite extensions HERE.
I would say a downside of using this product is how tangled my hair is the next day after. But luckily it washes out easily. Thank you, conditioner for your untangling magic.
