Hairstyles for Hair Loss: Hiking Edition

Go on a hike they said....It'll be fun they said...

Maybe your friends are super stoked to go on a hiking excursion... You've got the list of everyone who has confirmed. Some you know very well..Others maybe not so much...Regardless, you're excited for the weekend ahead.

Bonds will be formed, nature will be explored, s'mores will be roasted...But then it hits you... What about my hair loss?

How are you going to conceal this through the weekend?

This post is all about ways to hide hair loss when hiking or camping with friends...Why did I choose this as a topic?

Wellp...I just got into hiking myself and it's something I've been figuring out as I go...So I wanted to share.

Let me start this post by saying I'm a total amateur when it comes to hiking... If you follow my blog then you know I recently discovered that documentary on Netflix called The Alpinist about soloist Marc-Andre Leclerc.

I finished that documentary and all of a sudden I found myself at REI buying a pair of water proof hiking boots. Emphasis on water proof. For whatever reason I just knew I needed these. The very patient woman at the store who was helping me asked...

"But are you going to actually be crossing any bodies of water?"

To which I replied... "I really just don't want to limit myself."

(In case you're curious about my first hiking boot purchase I've linked them below since I also found them on amazon). They actually fit my narrow feet. I'm talking pencil-box narrow and they're super comfortable which also surprised me.

(But also keep in mind...This is a blog about hair loss...So consult your hiking bloggers for what's best when it comes to footwear).

They even make a version that goes higher up on the ankle in case you need that added protection. But I can't speak to the comfort of these since I have not tried this version.

Now back to hair loss.....I definitely felt a bit of anxiety going on a hiking trip with friends of friends who I had not discussed my hair loss with.

Especially because this trip involved multiple nights in a tent and I wasn't planning on bringing my hair toppers which I do like to wear pretty regularly.

I stayed in a tent with my friends who did know about my androgenic alopecia and have been really supportive. During the trip I would just get ready in my tent and use the pocket mirror I brought to check my hair a bit and then step out to join everyone once I was done.

Spoiler alert I ended up having a great time on the trip... No one asked me about my hair. And the weekend provided another example of this: People aren't really paying attention to what's going on with my hair.

With that being said here are some of the hairstyles for hair loss that you may want to consider if you have some outdoor activities coming up and are used to wearing toppers or wigs.

1. Hairstyles for Hair Loss: Hair fibers and concealing powder

I would only suggest the above items if you're sure you will not be getting really sweaty. If you're going to be on some strenuous hikes then these fibers may clump or when mixed with sweat even run down your forehead if you use them around your hairline.

But for hiking in a colder climate or on a pretty mellow hike/walk I think using these options could be great because you can lock the fibers in place with hair spray and they wont move.

For a weekend away when showers may not be available this may be a good option depending on your level of hair loss along with the level of activity.

If you haven't tried them before...Hair fibers save lives. I just sprinkle them on the areas where I’m thinning and they cling to my existing hair follicles, covering any noticeable bald spots or patchiness.

I use this specific brand because I have found they aren’t as clumpy as other hair fibers that I have tried. But that doesn’t mean that after I sprinkle them on, the work is done. I still use a fine tooth comb and comb through my hair to ensure that the hair fibers are dispersed evenly.

I use this fill-in powder linked above almost daily around my hairline.

I like it because it's matte. I've used others fill-in powders that had some shimmer...Why would I want a fill-in powder that I'm applying to my scalp to have shimmer? No idea. Anyways...Rant over...

The applicator brush that this fill-in powder comes with allows me to place the powder exactly where I want it to go...This gives me more control than using hair fibers or a root touch up spray for coverage. But let me just call out: If you're someone who loves a good applicator brush... then this is probably not it. I personally use the brush included with this product with no issues. It does it's job. But their are usually bristles poking out in every direction that shed from the brush pretty easily. So you may want to use your own applicator brush, although I don't find it to be necessary for me.

2. Hairstyles for Hair Loss: Hats, Visors & Beanies

If you're going to be spending time outdoors and you're worried about protecting your scalp then definitely try a hat, visor, or beanie.

I think the options above are perfect for whenever I know I'm going to be out in the sun for extended periods of time and don't want to put in the effort required to conceal my hair loss. Plus the items I've linked above come in tons of different colors.

I'm always wearing hats when I'm hiking. This just simplifies things for me and there are so many styles to choose from.

But what if your level of hair loss is a bit more severe? These options below actually have synthetic hair attached. I don't always find synthetic hair to look very realistic. It can be a bit too shiny for my taste but having a bit of a wave makes the synthetic hair look more realistic in my opinion. These are some cost-effective options you may want to consider if you aren't looking to spend hundreds on a human hair piece.

3. Hairstyles for Hair Loss While Hiking: Headbands

These wide headbands are gentle on your hair and great for working out. If you're looking for something other than a hat these could also be great for concealing a thinning hairline.

You could easily pair a headband with any of the hair additions listed below if you're looking for creating more volume.

4. Hairstyles for Hair Loss: Hair Additions

If I pull my hair back into a ponytail and put on a hat my bio hair poking out resembles a rat tail. It is so tiny. This is why I'm all about hair additions. They are amazing for adding more fullness.

I've used these human hair buns and love them. The adjustable band is comfortable and exactly like a hair tie. Gather your hair at the top of your head and create a high bun. Then pair this look with a headband... Or try a low bun paired with a hat.

Bangs are great for concealing a thinning hairline. I love switching it up with clip-on bangs! Get super wild and pair these with a thinner headband or even a high or low bun while you're out hitting the trails.

You can do the same with the human hair ponytail I've linked above. I personally do not use this item because it's just too much weight for my thinning hair.

Another option if you really want to create extra volume in your ponytail? This option depends on your level of thinning...

Try clip-in hair extensions for creating more fullness and volume. (There are many videos on youtube which discuss this in more depth). Just make sure the density is not too heavy to where you feel too much of a pull on your bio hair.

For this option I would suggest sectioning off your hair horizontally into two sections. Then create a tiny ponytail with your bio-hair using some of the hair between the two sections---but leave a good portion of your bio hair from the top and bottom sections out.

Clip your extensions in around the base of this small ponytail that sits between the two sections of parted hair. Then gather all your hair up...Bio hair + extensions and tie into one larger ponytail... The original tiny ponytail should be concealed by your bio hair and the extensions should add more fullness There you have it!

If you're starting to play outdoors more and finding yourself stressing about your hair loss I'd encourage you to ponder this...We only have this life...What types of experiences do you want to have? Who do you want to have them with? Don't let your hair loss hold you back from your next great adventure. It is so worth it to get outside and send it!
